The
Hortol STOL kit, as fitted to the Maltese Falcon, gives a leading edge
cuff, wing fences, aileron gap strips and wing tips with a revised profile.
The
kit can be fitted without having to dismantle the aircraft and is a compromise
between the original Cessna wing camber and the more complicated kits
that were offered by Robertson and Wren. Although the Civil Aviation
Authority stress in the flight manual that no performance credit can be
taken for the STOL kit it appears that, when taking off from Fenland,
out aircraft has a significantly shorter take off run than the standard
Cessna 172.
The
cost of purchasing and fitting the kit is in the region of £ 2,500 plus
VAT, depending on the amount of respray work that is required. Fordaire
Aviation Ltd., at Sywell will carry out the installation should you wish.

The
wing fence is the most obvious sign that the aircraft is non standard.
